The male students, now dressed in gym uniforms, headed to the training field.

Besides Class 5, there were other classes in the spacious training field.

All the classes with overlapping combat lessons had gathered here.

Of course, the training field was so vast that their activity areas didn’t overlap.

Professor Sena stood in front of the students who were gathered on the dirt ground.

Harlin observed Sena’s lesson from the back.

“In the combat lessons, you will train to apply your abilities. Any questions?”

Iliana raised her hand.

“Yes, Iliana?”

“What does ability application training mean exactly? Is it different from the training in our major courses?”

“It is different. Let’s take magic as an example. Iliana, could you create a Fireball?”

Iliana, who aspired to be a Magic Swordsman in the dual-class path, easily created a fist-sized Fireball.

“Now! Iliana, how would you apply that Fireball to maximize its efficiency?”

“Um! First, I’d inject more mana into its formula. Then I’d add a damage-boosting formula and a spell duplication formula!”

Whoosh! Whoosh!

The Fireball grew larger and split into two.

“This way, I can maximize the Fireball’s efficiency!”

“Is that all?”

“Huh? Um… Well, maybe if I add another formula…”

Professor Sena smiled kindly as she watched Iliana struggle.

“It’s okay. Next, Chelsea?”

“Yes, Professor.”

“What other ways could we further maximize the Fireball’s efficiency?”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t think of anything beyond what Iliana said.”

“Understood. Then, next…”

The magic-major students avoided her gaze.

Even the top magic honors student couldn’t answer; how could they possibly know?

“Leo?”

“Yes.”

“How would you maximize the Fireball’s efficiency?”

“Control. No matter how powerful it is, you need to hit the target to make it efficient.”

“Correct! Leo gets 5 points for his answer.”

The students were deflated by the overly simple answer.

“When you train your abilities, most of you tend to focus more on power than control. That’s why most students are poor at controlling their abilities.”

The students looked confused, unable to understand how they were poor at control despite using their abilities daily.

“Here’s a challenge.”

Professor Sena summoned a Sylph, a spirit of the wind.

“Anyone who can capture this Sylph will receive bonus points. You can use all your abilities.”

The students eagerly attempted to catch the Sylph.

However, none succeeded in capturing the Sylph, which wasn’t particularly fast or powerful.

The Sylph avoided their hands with movements as if it were possessed.

Eventually, multiple students tried to catch it at the same time, but they still failed.

“Huff-! Huff! That thing might not even be a Sylph!”

Cal lay flat on the ground, panting heavily.

“Huff, huff! Then what is it?”

Chelsea, slumped on the ground, asked in response.

“How should I know?!”

The Sylph floated in the air, putting its hands on its hips and making a smug face.

Whoosh-!

Flames surged around it.

Leo, who had been standing still, charged at the Sylph.

The Sylph tried to escape with a relaxed expression.

Leo increased his speed, closing the gap and reaching out his hand.

The Sylph dodged with a sharp movement.

Flames erupted from Leo’s hand, blocking the Sylph’s path.

The Sylph swerved in the air, but a wall of flames instantly turned into ropes that chased after it.

The Sylph, caught off guard, panicked.

Before the ropes could bind it, the Sylph sped upward, escaping into the sky.

“Hey, Sylph! That’s cheating!”

At Sena’s words, the Sylph made an apologetic face.

It seemed it had instinctively used more power than allowed.

“Still, that was excellent, Leo.”

Sena clapped her hands.

“As you saw, Leo didn’t use great power. Combat lessons focus on training to apply your abilities in such ways.”

The students of Class 5 began to understand what Sena meant about their poor control.

From the back, Professor Harlin chuckled.

‘No wonder Ain was drooling over him.’

When it came to aura control, Leo was undoubtedly the top among first-years.

“Tsk, so inelegant.”

Crackle-!

A golden flash of aura surged, engulfing the Sylph.

Thump-!

Before the Sylph could react, it was caught in a single hand.

Thud-!

As the male student landed, Duran glared at Leo.

Clap! Clap! Clap!

“As expected of Duran! Truly a skill befitting the top student!”

“You flatter me.”

Duran responded to the middle-aged professor.

“Hmm? How curious. Professor Harlin, one of the most respected at Lumerne, none of your students could catch the Sylph, but one of ours managed it easily.”

Harlin stared at the flamboyantly dressed professor with a tired look.

“Ah, that’s right! Class 5 has the lowest average, don’t they? My, my, I must have been rude.”

“Don’t you have a lesson to teach, Sedgen?”

Harlin sighed as he watched Professor Sedgen dramatically apologize.

“Of course! I came to teach!”

Sedgen spread his arms wide.

“Class 1 and Class 5! I propose a class competition! Surely you won’t avoid it? Of course, even if you do, I won’t hold it against you. After all, Class 1 has three top students! Hahaha!”

Sedgen laughed heartily, pointing at the three leading students of Class 1, including Duran.

Leo spoke to two of them.

“Hello, elegant and lovely Class 1 students.”

Celia and Chloe, who had been hanging their heads, raised them to glare at Leo with intimidating eyes.

Of course, Leo was unfazed.

“Assistant Professor, why is that professor acting like that?”

Chelsea asked with a baffled expression.

“That’s Professor Sedgen. He started teaching at the same time as Professor Harlin.”

“Professor Sedgen is just as famous as Professor Harlin, isn’t he?”

“He’s renowned as one of the best professors at Lumerne.”

Unlike the infamously feared Harlin, Sedgen was a teacher many students aspired to learn from.

However, while Sedgen was highly respected, Harlin was the top choice for most admired professor, with Sedgen ranked second.

According to Sena’s explanation, Sedgen had a strong sense of rivalry with Harlin.

Class 5 students watched as Sedgen used every word he could to provoke Harlin.

‘Professor Harlin isn’t even flinching.’

‘Professor Sedgen looks kind of pitiful.’

Sena finally spoke up, unable to watch Sedgen endlessly trying to provoke the unresponsive Harlin.

“Professor Sedgen, since this is the first lesson, a sudden class competition might be a bit…”

“Oh! Sena Tilia student… no, Assistant Professor Sena!”

Sedgen opened his arms wide and approached Sena.

“It’s been so long! I’ve been so worried about you! Seeing you as an assistant professor now fills my heart with pride!”

“Thank you for your concern,” Sena replied with an awkward smile.

“Regardless, Assistant Professor Sena! Even though it’s the first lesson, it doesn’t matter! As students of Lumerne, unexpected situations are bound to arise!”

“Still…”

“Our proud Class 1 students are always ready for a class competition! Isn’t that right?”

“Yes, Professor!”

“How elegant!”

As Sedgen spoke with a satisfied expression, Cal chuckled and approached Class 1.

With his characteristic friendliness, he began teasing the Class 1 students he had grown close to during the temporary lesson period.

“You’re all so elegant, Class 1 students!”

“Do you want to die?”

“Stop teasing us!”

Some of the Class 1 students, including Celia and Chloe, growled at Cal.

However, Cal’s teasing didn’t stop.

“What event are we competing in?”

“Hohoho! You won’t back down, will you? Are you sure about this? Class 5 is bound to lose.”

“I don’t care about winning or losing.”

Harlin spoke in a dry tone.

“What’s important is that the students learn something from the experience, no matter the outcome.”

“Then your students will learn about defeat!”

“Even if they learn about defeat, I can teach them how to rise above it. And…”

Harlin smirked.

“They could just as well learn the composure of a winner.”

Class 5 students looked touched as they watched Harlin’s confident response.

“Professor Sena was right!”

“Even though he speaks harshly, it’s clear our professor really cares about us!”

“We respect you, Professor!”

Sedgen grinned wickedly.

“Alright, then let’s make a wager. The losing class will clean the first-year classroom building’s bathrooms for a month. Additionally, the losing professor will buy drinks for the winning class!”

“Fine by me.”

Screams erupted from Class 5.

“Aaaahhh!”

“How could you agree to that so easily?!”

“Hey, lovely ladies?”

Cal, who had been teasing the others relentlessly, broke out into a nervous sweat.

“We’re friends, right? You’ll go easy on us, won’t you? Maybe aim for a draw or something?”

“We’re going to win, of course.”

“Yes, elegantly.”

Celia swept back her hair with a cold smile, while Chloe cracked her knuckles with a malicious grin.

“Leo! Chelsea! We’re counting on you! Save our class!”

Cal immediately turned tearful and clung to Leo and Chelsea.

In Class 5, only the top students—Leo, the school representative, and Chelsea, the second-place student in the western exams—could stand a chance against the top students of Class 1.

“I don’t plan on losing.”

“Exactly. A mage from the Lewallin family doesn’t learn about defeat.”

Leo spoke calmly, and Chelsea crossed her arms with a smug “Hmph!”

“So? What event will decide the match?”

“Hohoho! There’s a traditional event for Lumerne’s combat lessons, isn’t there?”

Sedgen smiled meaningfully at Harlin’s question.

“Of course, it’s that one.”

Harlin sighed softly.

Tension began to build between Class 5 and Class 1.

“No way… that one?”

“I didn’t think I’d actually have to do it.”

“I’ve done it before.”

The students swallowed nervously.

Only Leo looked puzzled.

“It must be a pretty intense event, huh?”

“It’s no joke. It’s an official event even during exchange competitions with other hero academies.”

Chelsea spoke with a tense voice.

As an official event that represented the school’s pride, it was bound to be highly competitive.

Clap!

Sedgen clapped his hands, and Class 1’s assistant professor handed him something.

It was a transparent ball the size of a fist.

“One of Lumerne’s combat traditions! We’ll settle this with Bastera!”

‘After all that serious buildup, it’s just a ball game?’

Leo looked bewildered.
